The Seattle Trail

Departing Chicago we headed across Illinois, Iowa and South Dakota. I had not previously visited South Dakota, except for a quick pass through Sioux City, so I was interested to see what I could see.

The east half of the state was rolling farmland. A continuation of Iowa, Nebraska, etc. Then we crossed the time zone (central to mountain) and behold ... the Badlands!

Nothing "bad" about those views!

We also visited Mount Rushmore and Sturgis (just a few days ahead of the annual rally craziness).

Next we headed to Montana and overnighted in one of our favorite little towns, Red Lodge. Had an amazing dinner at the Carbon County Steakhouse and a fun Saturday night.

Sunday we headed out of Red Lodge for one of our favorite drives through the Bear Tooth Pass and into the northeast entrance of Yellowstone.

The pass is like being on top of the world and pictures do not do justice to the views. As we came down into the valley just before entering the Park, we encountered a herd of buffalo.

More on our push west later.
