UP-ward Bound

Having made the west coast of MI yesterday, mid-day, we made our way north along Lake Michigan toward the Upper Peninsula.

We caught our first good look at the lake about halfway up the coast and had our first lighthouse sighting on Northpoint, above Traverse City.

We overnighted in Traverse City and enjoyed some delicious smoked-whitefish dip for dinner. After a restful night, we began yesterday by touring more coastline and crossing the bridge into the UP.

We headed north to Whitefish Point, the northern most point in the UP, extending into Lake Superior. This was the sight of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald (who knew?).

From here we traveled the southern coast of Lake Superior, as best as the roads would allow, heading to Marquette (our overnight stop). Along the way, we experienced a host of sights, including additional lighthouses, waterfalls and a spectacular sunset.

We also came across this big beauty.

The only one still operating in the US. To give you proper perspective, that is a train on top of the structure. It is an Ore Dock, designed to allow for mined ore to be transferred via chutes to a ship/barge for water-based transit.

Today we will cross the UP, heading south and tour a bit of the northern shore of Lake Michigan, our final portion thru the UP.

This is beautiful country! However, it is remote, hard to travel to/from, and (Beth is focused on this one), cold. Winters rarely climb above freezing temps. The bridge seasons top out in the 50s. We are here in June with temps between 60-78 (day time) and the locals are telling us these temps just arrived and at 78, they think they are having a heat-wave. Missing 103 at home just a bit.
